Flood Defences

Flood Defences

The Netherlands is renowned internationally for its knowledge of water management. We have many thousands of kilometres of dikes to protect us from flooding. Arthe regularly contributes to dike structural assessments and improvements.

Although protection against flooding is paramount, the (social) context is increasingly important in projects. People live, travel and recreate on a dike. This means that dike improvements are becoming increasingly complex and call for innovative and integrated solutions.

Primary flood defences

The national Flood Protection Programme (HWBP) recently gave a boost to improve the primary flood defences in particular. With the introduction of the new legislation concerning safety assessment and improvement design, a fundamental change has been made in the design approach determining the strength of the subsurface. Arthe is closely involved in the implementation of this new design approach for the first dike that is to be improved: the Markermeer dike between Amsterdam and Hoorn. In the coming years, other primary water defences will be similarly assessed and, if necessary, improved.

Crossings

Almost every large-scale infrastructural project involves crossing dikes, digging into a dike, raising or building on a dike. Arthe always ensures that the work around the dike complies with the most recent regulations, so that construction can take place in a safe and future-proof manner.

Constructions

If the design with an earth embankment does not offer a viable solution due to lack of space, Arthe can provide you with suitable alternatives. Possibilities include both visible (sheet piling, diaphragm walls) and invisible (soil nailing, vacuum consolidation, mixed in place columns) solutions.
