Sunken roads and railway

Sunken roads and railway

Due to its increasing population pressure, the Randstad has become highly urbanized in recent decades, which has resulted in a large number of objects on and in the subsurface. Consequently, when constructing or widening a (rail)road the existing space in the subsurface must be used in a creative manner. In addition, clients such as Rijkswaterstaat, Provinces and Municipalities are increasingly imposing stricter requirements with regard to safety, next to the fact that a highway, freeway or railway should preferably cause as little nuisance to the environment as possible. A sunken road or railroad is therefore often applied as a solution.

Because a sunken (rail)road is located a few meters below ground level, and it must remain dry at all times, it should cope with the often high groundwater level in our country. Because the bottom side of such a sunken (rail)road must withstand high water pressures, the engineering of such a (rail)road is a challenging task. Arthe Civil & Structure offers flexible and visionary designers who draw on a wealth of experience:

  • Arthe Civil & Structure was involved with a large number of projects, where sunken (rail)roads has been applied. This was for various phases at these projects: from feasibility analyses, to engineering, to implementation supervision;
  • For these projects Arthe Civil & Structure performed both the structural design and the foundation design for the construction of sunken (rail)road composed of concrete;
  • During engineering Arthe Civil & Structure applies state-of-the-art knowledge with regard to dynamic loads and earthquakes;
  • Arthe Civil & Structure was also involved in the design of a sunken location consisting a polymer geomembrane construction, whereby the CUR 221 was applied for its geotechnical design. An extensive and thorough soil investigation is subsequently Arthe is able to plan and elaborate soil investigations;
  • The current zeitgeist requires that design should be carried out in an integrated approach. Using a BIM model facilitates this process;
  • The committed and transparent company structure of Arthe Civil & Structure enables us to respond to the desire to design integrally. Arthe has consistently proven to deliver high quality structural and geotechnical designs
