Bored tunnel Rotterdamsebaan

Bored tunnel Rotterdamsebaan

Client: Municipality of The Hague
Year: 2012 - 2016
Location: Den Haag
Fields of Expertise: Tunnels and influence of the surroundings

The Rotterdamsebaan is the new connecting road between the national motorway network from interchange Ypenburg (A4/A13) and The Hague’s ring road. A large part of this connecting road is underground, passing under the urban districts Vlietzone and the Binckhorst. The underground part is executed as a bored tunnel.

Arthe Civil & Structure was commissioned by the municipality of The Hague to make the preliminary design of the tunnel. In the succeeding phases, Arthe supervised within the project team of the Municipality of The Hague the tender, design and construction works.

Knowledge of the subsurface – Geotechnical Basis Report

Arthe Civil & Structure has gained experience all over the world in the field of underground constructions. Knowledge of the subsurface is hereby essential. For the Rotterdamsebaan, we set out the campaign for the required soil- and laboratory investigations and subsequently drafted the geotechnical design report. This geotechnical design report subsequently served as the starting point for all tendering contractor combinations and formed the basis for all further designs of the civil structures.

Summary of our activities

Arthe has performed the following activities for this project:

  • Crafting of a pre-design of the bored tunnel functioning as a reference design for the contract. This pre-design includes analyses of the stability of the bored front on various critical sections of the route and the design and dimensioning of the lining of the bored tunnel.
  • Advice and various analyses with regard to the influence on the surroundings during the construction of the tunnel and the restrictions in the use of the adjacent plots of land above the tunnel after construction of the tunnel.
  • Drawing up of the extensive geotechnical ground investigation program and preparation of a geotechnical design report.
  • Geotechnical advice from the front office of the municipality project team.
  • Project management of the Ypenburg junction from the municipality project team.
  • Review of the tunnel related designs engineered by the contractor (back office), including:
    • Tunnel lining design;
    • Drill front stability and grout pressures;
    • Design of the cross connections;
    • Design of the start- and receiving shaft;
    • Design of the auxiliary structures for the drilling process.
