Full scale test bored tunnel Rijnlandroute

From tender design challenge ..

During the tender phase of the Rijnlandroute project, the planned alignment of the tunnel turned out to be too shallow to pass the Rijn-Schie channel. Conventional calculation methods could not ensure face stability at the channel crossing.  Due to restrictions of the local authorities it wasn’t possible to change the alignment at this point.

With a state of the art calculation approach Arthe Civil & Structure confirmed the channel could be crossed safely without ballasting the channel.

.. to field measurements.

Part of the design was a full scale test field emulating conditions beneath the channel. Arthe designed the test field near the launch shaft of the bored tunnel. By monitoring at the early start of the boring process crucial information was gathered to be able to prove that the channel could be passed with sufficient safety.

After confirming the necessary safety margins the tunnel boring machine passed the channel safely both times,  resulting in a new proven method to design this type of process.
