Metro tunnel Mashhad Urban Railway Line 2
Year: 2008 - 2011
Client: Mashhad Urban Railway Organization
Location: Mashhad, Iran
Fields of Expertise: Tunnels and damage risk assessment
In the Iranian city of Mashhad, a new metro system is being built. Arthe Civil & Structure has performed the complete design and engineering for the bored section of the tunnel of the second metro line, including the design and structural analysis of the concrete tunnel-lining. The two-track tunnel tube has an external diameter of 9.10 m and the length of the drilled part is approximately 10.80 km.
A new step
The Mashhad Urban Railway Line 2 project marked a new step for the Arthe team. It is the first project for which Arthe has made an integral civil engineering design of a tunnel construction.
For this project, Arthe’s involvement was not limited to the design and engineering of the civil construction itself, but it also included the functional design. This led to an increase in the diameter of the tunnel for a more efficient use of space and, project integral, a cost reduction for the client.
Furthermore, Arthe was able to use its gained knowledge in the decision for the tunnel boring machine and the system for the segment lining.
Our activities in brief:
- Functional design based on the requirements of the client and stakeholders;
- Desk study, supervision and interpretation of the ground- and laboratory investigations;
- Guidance for the procurement process of the tunnel boring machine (TBM);
- Design of the reinforced concrete segments for the tunnel lining;
- Engineering of the drilling processes and the support- and mortar pressures;
- Analysis of influences on the surroundings due to the drilling process and prevention measures for damage to adjacent structures;
- Design of the auxiliary structures for the start- and receiving shaft of the TBM.
